To be eligible for a USAA credit card an applicant has to be currently on active duty, serving the United States honorably, anywhere in the world, or have served honorably during any of the eligible war eras.

USAA stands for United Services Automobile Association. Per wikipedia, “USAA was founded in 1922 in San Antonio by a group of 25 U.S. Army officers as a mechanism for mutual self-insurance when they were unable to secure auto insurance because of the perception that they, as military officers, were a high-risk group. USAA has since expanded to offer banking and insurance services to past and present members of the Armed Forces, officers and enlisted, and their families.”

  5. Wonderful web site. Plenty of helpful information here.
I’m sending it to a few friends ans additionally sharing in delicious. And obviously, thanks for your effort!

  6. I AM A VETERAN DURING THE VIETNAM WAR ERA. I HAVE LESS THAN PERFECT CREDIT I WOULD LIKE A CREDIT CRD WITH 2,000LIMIT. IWOULD LIKE TOPAY LESS THAN 25% INTEREST WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND,

  7. Glad to hear from you. Staying under 25% APR may not be that easy. Of the major card issuers Discover Card is the simplest route. I would call them first at 800-347-2683 to find out if they have what you want. I found talking to a good rep could help bend the rules if that’s needed. An other bank to try is First Citizens since their Smart Option card APR is 15.24% to 24.24% max. Their website is firstcitizens.com and phone number is 888-323-4732. The hassle of getting in touch with a real person is usually worth it.

The best route for a veteran is joining one of the military-focused credit unions(CUs). The Veterans Benefits Banking Program at https://veteransbenefitsbanking.org/ lists a bunch of banks and credit unions that specialize in catering to veterans. Generally credit unions offer lower APRs than banks. For instance none of the credit cards from Navy Federal Credit Union charge more than 18% APR. Among the 59 CUs or Federal Credit Unions(FCUs) VBBP lists are 1st Advantage FCU, Air Academy CU, Andrews (Air Force Base) FCU, Bragg Mutual FCU, Hanscom FCU, Kirtland FCU, Langley FCU, State Department FCU, Travis FCU. The 1st Advantage FCU APR ranges between 13% and 17.95%, while the Langley FCU standard card APR starts at 18%. Quite a difference between them.

In today’s turbulent times getting a great deal on a credit card isn’t easy. Hopefully one of the options listed above fits your needs.
